one of the largest of all plant families, containing dicotyledonous plants of great variety and wide distribution, characterized by having a legume as the fruit; the legumes. The family includes ornamentals such as the lupine and wisteria, and many plants of great economic importance such as the pea, peanut, bean, indigo, clover, and licorice.
